Ten volle interdisciplinair
Interculturele competentieontwikkeling put uit een interdisciplinair laboratorium: psychologen, antropologen, sociale wetenschappers, filosofen, linguïsten, geografen, historici, economisten ... leveren hun bijdrage. Het gaat daarbij niet om elke discipline op zich, maar wat ontstaat uit de vermenging van theoretische concepten en inzichten uit de praktijk. Living Stone Centrum selecteerde een aantal inspirerende auteurs, scholen en instrumenten die haar interventies onderbouwen.
Auteurs
De eerste informatie die we opzoeken betreft de geschiedenis, geografie en cultuur van een regio of land. Een beter begrip van de historisch gegroeide manier van zijn en worden helpt om politieke ontwikkelingen, sociale gebruiken, motivaties te plaatsen. Een internet search helpt u op weg. Cultuurbespiegelingen van eminente filosofen, linguisten, essayisten verruimen ons blikveld. Een keuze aan auteurs vindt u hierna. Interculturele studies in de lijn van Hofstede e.a. bewezen hun nut als startpunt. Maar het 'Intercultural Competence'-model en raamwerk van Darla Deardorff is beter aangepast aan de culturele dynamieken van de 21ste eeuw.

Amy Chua stelt dat (opportunistische, relatieve) tolerantie een noodzakelijke voorwaarde voor wereldoverheersing is. En omgekeerd dat intolerantie en etnocentrisme nauw verbonden zijn met de neergang van hypermachten.

Modellen
De principes van 'Mindful Observation' en 'Actief Luisteren' zijn richting gevend in de keuze van modellen. 'Mindful' observeren gaat om een bepaalde kwaliteit van aandacht die gericht is op de verwondering in het huidige moment, zonder meteen een betekenis toe te kennen of uitspraken te doen. Actief luisteren is de eigen uitgangspunten en neiging tot conclusies trekken bewust 'parkeren' om meer te weten te komen over wat de gesprekspartner beweegt om te zeggen wat hij zegt (of niet), doet (of niet).
